Aims and Objectives
Aims
The St John's Wood Society was founded in 1963 to conserve the unique character
of the neighbourhood. It presents residents' views on planning
matters, traffic problems and tree preservation to the Westminster City
Council,
and to developers. The committee and sub-committees on planning,
trees and traffic include local councillors, architects, surveyors and lawyers
all
giving their services on a voluntary basis.
The Society has been
instrumental in the listing of buildings of historic and architectural
merit and in the creation of the St John's Wood
Conservation areas. It is a recognised body for consultation
under the Civic Amenities Act 1967. Local planning applications are referred
by
the relevant
planning authorities to the Society, whose views are respected
and often lead to modification of the applications. The Society
has given evidence
at numerous public enquiries and is constantly involved in problems
affecting trees and traffic.
Objectives
To encourage the following objects by charitable means but not otherwise:
- to
encourage high standards of architecture and town planning
in St John's Wood
- to stimulate public interest in and care for the beauty,
history
and character of St John's Wood
- to encourage the preservation,
development and improvement of features of general public amenity
or historic interest
- to oppose by any means available to the Society
any development in any part of St John's Wood which in the
view of the Society would detract from the beauty, history and character
of that
part or its features of general public amenity or historic interest
