Basement Developments in St. John's Wood

In a parliamentary debate on 8th November, Karen Buck, MP for Wesminster North, told MPs that basements in the more prosperous corners of her constituency were being turned into "underground cinemas, swimming pools, gymnasiums and gun rooms" with scant regard for the "devastating" effect such developments could have on nearby residents. Chairman's Message

Peter Leaver

This Report is the last that will be written by the Chairman of the St John’s Wood Society while the King’s Troop is in residence in St John’s Wood Barracks, its home for over 200 years. It is, therefore, a sad occasion as the Troop has been such an integral part of the life of St John’s Wood for so long.

We have been determined to see the Troop off with a flourish, and thanks to the fantastic efforts of Clive Beecham, our newest recruit to the Executive Committee, and his wife, Alison, many of you will have been able to visit the Barracks, to buy souvenirs of the Troop and, finally, to say a resounding farewell to the Troop in St John’s Wood High Street on the 6 February. None of those who were present on that occasion will quickly forget it. The affection felt for the Troop by St John’s Wood was there for all to see, and one of the most enjoyable features of the day was that so many pupils from St John’s Wood schools were present to wave goodbye to the Troop.
